The Florida Gators are heading into a massive showdown against No. 7 Texas, and it’s looking like we’ll see a change under center. Sophomore Tramell Jones Jr. is trending to make his first-ever career start, per sources, as starting QB Aaron Philo is still dealing with an injury.
Philo picked up the knock during last week’s tough 38-19 loss to South Carolina. Jones stepped in during that game, but he had a rough outing, throwing for 40 yards with an interception while completing six of eight passes.
The Scouting Report
Despite the shaky relief appearance, Jones isn't just some random backup. He was a solid three-star recruit and ranked as the No. 25 QB in the 2025 class. 247Sports Director of Scouting Andrew Ivins even dropped a high-key comparison to Florida legend Chris Leak. Coach Jon Sumrall says he’s seen the right energy from Jones, noting that Philo has even been hyping his teammate up at practice. "Tramell is gonna be ready when his number is called," Sumrall said.
The Texas Problem
Real talk: this is a brutal debut for a first-timer. The Texas defense is absolute nightmare fuel. They’re top-25 nationally in yards and points allowed, and their front seven is relentless. Defensive powerhouse Colin Simmons—who is lowkey projected as a first-round NFL draft pick—is leading the country with 12 tackles for loss and 9.5 sacks.
Texas already proved they can shut down a young QB; they sacked Tennessee’s Faizon Brandon 10 times earlier this season. Making matters worse, Florida’s star running back Jadan Baugh has been neutralized for two weeks straight, and he’ll need to break out of that slump for the Gators to have a fighting chance.
Why it matters
If Jones can manage the pressure of an away game at Darrell K Royal, he could prove he’s the real deal. But against a Texas defense that plays like it’s personal, Florida is going to need a miracle to keep this one from turning into a blowout.
