A neighborhood in mourning

The community at 2550 Olinville Ave. in the Bronx is reeling after a heartbreaking tragedy. Early Tuesday morning, 23-year-old Nathaly Ramirez was killed after allegedly being pushed from a 15th-floor balcony while clutching her 8-month-old daughter, Angel Novalty Carrasco-Ramirez. The infant survived the fall but remains in critical condition at Jacobi Hospital, fighting for her life.

The investigation

According to law enforcement sources, the suspect—31-year-old Angel Carrasco—fled the scene immediately after the incident. Police found a bouquet of flowers at the apartment, which sources believe he brought in a failed attempt to reconcile his relationship with Ramirez. A chilling wanted poster released by the NYPD showed Carrasco in an elevator holding a large kitchen knife before he was eventually tracked down and nabbed by the United States Marshals Service on Wednesday evening.

A history of violence

This wasn't a sudden outburst; sources indicate Carrasco has a history of domestic violence. He was arrested twice earlier this year in incidents involving Ramirez, including a January 5 arrest for allegedly slapping her and a burglary charge three days later. Neighbors reported hearing a male voice shouting "Jump!" before the sound of a "big thud" and the victim's desperate pleas.

US Marshal Ricky J. Patel stated that taking the suspect off the street ensures he answers for his alleged actions, adding that the team owed it to the mother who died protecting her child. Friends remembered Ramirez as a devoted mother, with high school pal Dominique Rosado stating, "In the last moment of her life, she was protecting her daughter."
