Speeding things up

Real talk: waiting for confirmations on-chain is a total vibe killer. Zcash is officially trying to fix that by cutting its target block time from 75 seconds down to 25. The upgrade, known as NU7, just went live on the public testnet at block 4,465,026. This isn't live for your actual bags yet, but it's a huge move for devs and infra operators to stress-test the new mechanics before the main event.

Why it matters

By shortening block times, Zcash wants to make life easier for merchants and exchanges who need those confirmations to verify transactions. If you currently need three confirmations, you're looking at a 225-second wait. With this upgrade, that shrinks to about 75 seconds.

The fine print

This update is highkey about more than just speed. NU7 is also tweaking the tokenomics: 40% of fees go to miners, while 60% are getting burned to fund future rewards, ensuring the network stays incentivized as issuance slows down. Importantly, the block reward is dropping to one-third to make sure faster blocks don't cause an inflation spike.

Heads up: if you’ve got funds sitting in Sprout—Zcash’s oldest private-payment system—you need to move them before the mainnet launch, because NU7 is officially sunsetting that tech. Developers are reviewing the testnet data now and expect to push this to mainnet around November 5. Remember, this is tech development, not financial advice, so stay sharp.
