The turning point
Real talk: Zach Bryan has been on a serious journey. In a new two-hour convo with the legendary Matthew McConaughey, the 30-year-old country star got vulnerable about why he decided to quit drinking. It’s giving major growth, honestly.
Bryan shared that he used to think sobriety was just "a joke" for people who couldn’t handle their business. He didn't think he had a problem until a solo motorcycle trip from NYC to LA forced him to look in the mirror. He spent the month bouncing between national parks and bars, trying to find some sort of "soul journey"—but mostly just drinking himself to sleep.
The Pilot parking lot revelation
The plot thickens in Seattle. Bryan recalls sitting on the curb of a Pilot truck stop with a 40-ounce Budweiser, feeling completely empty. He realized he had just spent 30 days chasing a vibe that wasn't there. "I go into this Pilot and I grab a 40 Budweiser... I’m drinking and I’m thinking ‘What the hell was all that worth?" he told McConaughey.
That parking lot moment was the catalyst. He realized he was wasting his time and finally asked himself, "Why am I drinking right now?"
Life on the other side
Since ditching the alcohol, Bryan says he’s actually thriving. He’s feeling like a kid again, rediscovering his love for songwriting and just living his best life—from jumping in ponds to hanging with his dog. It’s safe to say he’s lowkey happier than he’s been in years.
This drop comes right alongside his new eight-song EP, Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs, which features collabs with Lana Del Rey and the Turnpike Troubadours.
Why it matters
Seeing a major artist like Zach Bryan talk so openly about his relationship with alcohol is a reminder that even when things look like a movie on the surface, the real struggle often happens behind the scenes. It’s a W for his mental health and his creative process.
