The crash

A tragic scene unfolded in Zimbabwe on Wednesday evening when a helicopter went down in the Marondera rural area, about 70km east of the capital, Harare. Police spokesperson Commissioner Paul Nyathi confirmed that the crash occurred around 17:00 local time, resulting in the death of all six people on board.

The group, which included two pilots, was reportedly travelling from Gandami in Chikomba—where Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke, were building a new home—when the aircraft went down at Kudenga Farm roughly 40 minutes after takeoff. Family spokesperson Herbert Chivayo confirmed the loss, stating the family is "at a loss for words."

The man behind the headlines

Wicknell Chivayo was a high-profile figure known for his extravagant lifestyle, which he frequently broadcasted on social media. As the managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe, his career was marked by a mix of philanthropy, displaying his wealth through gifts of cash and luxury cars, and involvement in massive government contracts.

He wasn't without controversy, though. His $172m solar power project in Gwanda faced years of legal hurdles, and he was previously investigated by the anti-corruption commission regarding election material procurement. He consistently denied any wrongdoing. Though he famously went by "Sir Wicknell," he never actually received a British knighthood.

Geopolitics and connections

Chivayo wasn't just a businessman; he was a fixture in regional political circles. He frequently shared photos of his meetings with various African leaders, including South Africa's Cyril Ramaphosa and Zambia's Hakainde Hichilema.

Following the news, Kenya's President William Ruto paid tribute to Chivayo as a "dear friend," praising his "energy and his deep conviction." This relationship had previously drawn fire from Kenyan opposition figures who questioned his consistent access to the State House.

Why it matters

It’s giving main character energy, but make it geopolitical. Chivayo’s death leaves a massive vacuum in Zimbabwe's business and political spheres. With the cause of the crash still under investigation, the plot thickens while the country grapples with the loss of one of its most polarizing and well-connected figures.
