The scene in Wellsburg
A Sunday afternoon youth gathering in the small village of Wellsburg, New York, turned tragic when a tractor pulling a hayride flipped, leaving 14 people injured. The group, identified as members of a German Baptist sect, was enjoying a local outing around 4:30 p.m. when things went south fast.
What happened
Chemung County Sheriff Bill Schrom confirmed that the John Deere tractor was heading down Comfort Hill Road toward Berwick Turnpike with 19 people—mostly kids—on the wagon. According to the investigation, the tractor approached an intersection at a high speed.
As the driver attempted to turn, they lost control and swerved to the right. The sudden movement caused the tractor to flip over and the hay wagon to detach, ejecting everyone who was on board. The vibes were off, to say the least, as emergency responders rushed to the scene.
The aftermath
Of the 14 people injured in the crash, three are currently in critical condition. One person had to be airlifted to a hospital, while five others were transported via ambulance to Robert Packer Hospital. Another eight people were taken to local medical facilities by private transport. It’s a total L for such a festive event, and authorities are still piecing together exactly what caused the driver to lose control.
Why it matters
This incident highlights how quickly a standard holiday-season activity can turn dangerous when safety protocols aren't strictly maintained. While the investigation is ongoing, the community is left reeling after such a scary moment for these youth attendees.
