A senseless tragedy
Real talk: the vibes are absolutely off in Baltimore right now. A homecoming youth football event at Leon Day Park turned into a nightmare Saturday evening when a 12-year-old girl was killed and three adults were injured in a shooting.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Richard Worley confirmed that the whole thing started over a parking space. Two men got into an argument, and in a move that can only be described as lowkey cowardly, both individuals started firing shots at each other. The young girl was caught in the crossfire while allegedly watching the game.
The aftermath
Police arrived at the 1200 block of North Franklintown Road around 6:15 p.m. after reports of gunfire. They found a 25-year-old woman with gunshot wounds at the scene, while the 12-year-old was rushed to the hospital, where she tragically passed away. Two other men, ages 28 and 23, later showed up at area hospitals for treatment.
As of late Saturday night, police were still on the hunt for the two suspects. Commissioner Worley did not mince words, calling the men involved "cowards."
Mayor Brandon Scott was clearly shaken, calling the incident "one of the most disgusting things Iβve ever seen in my life." He lamented the loss of the girl's potential, noting that her family and community are now left to deal with a pain that will stay rent-free in their hearts forever.
