The ultimate kitchen flex

Real talk: we live in a world of fast fashion and disposable tech, but some people are out here rocking the same kitchen gear they got decades ago. A recent exchange in The Guardian’s letters section reminded us that some household items have serious main character energy and refusing to quit.

Barbara Foster, from Welwyn Garden City, shared that she’s still using her wedding gifts from 1966. We’re talking a Picquot ware teapot, a classic Prestige egg whisk, and sturdy mixing bowls that have been in the rotation for nearly 60 years. Honestly, that’s such a vibe. Barbara noted that these pieces have even outlived her husband, showing that some kitchen staples are just lowkey immortal.

Don't try this at home

While some vintage gear is a total W, other tools have a limit. Pete Lavender from Nottingham shared a cautionary tale that honestly gives 'the plot thickens' energy. He used to own an old-school aluminium egg slicer that worked like a charm, until he got the bright idea to use it for mushrooms.

Spoiler alert: it did not go well. Pete confirmed that the gadget is strictly for eggs, and attempting to slice mushrooms on it was a major L.

Why it matters

It’s a good reminder that we don't always need the latest, trendiest kitchen gadgets to get the job done. Sometimes, the stuff that’s been sitting in the cupboard since the 60s is better than anything you can buy on an app today. Just maybe keep the mushroom-slicing hacks to yourself.
