A bizarre ambush

Imagine you’re in the middle of a cross-country race, locked in, and suddenly someone jumps out of the woods to attack you. That’s exactly what went down at the Coweta Cup Cross Country Championship at Newnan High School in Georgia last Saturday. The vibes were off from the start: 19-year-old University of Georgia student Aiden Dombrowski allegedly drove 110 miles from Athens to Newnan the night before and slept in his car just to wait for the race.

The takedown

According to police, Dombrowski somehow snagged an East Coweta High School uniform and lurked in the woods waiting for a specific Newnan High School runner to pass by. Witnesses said the whole thing looked like a scene straight out of a thriller. He allegedly held rocks in his hands and started shoving and punching his target.

Real talk: the victim wasn’t about to let that slide. He fought back, which lowkey sent Dombrowski fleeing into the woods. During his escape, the suspect apparently ditched the stolen gear, changed into a different tracksuit, and eventually turned himself in to the cops.

The aftermath

When police caught up with him, Dombrowski tried to claim the whole thing was a "prank." He admitted he knew the victim, calling him an "acquaintance," but denied there was any bad blood. Honestly, it’s giving major main character energy in the worst way. He showed up to his mugshot with a gash around his eye from the fight. While it’s unclear how he got his hands on that school uniform, one thing is certain: he’s not on the UGA cross-country or track team rosters. It’s a total L.

Why it matters

This chaotic incident turned a school sporting event into a crime scene, leaving officials and attendees confused by the bizarre motive behind such a targeted and stealthy ambush.
