Okay, real talk, the latest Saturday Night Live cold open was a whole vibe, and it was all about the Republican party trying to figure out their midterm strategy. Andrew Dismukes and Ashley Padilla played the strategists, and lowkey, it was a struggle.
First up, Marcello Hernández popped in as Marco Rubio, who basically told his constituents that Trump wasn't all that and his wars aren't exactly slaying. Then, Mikey Day showed up as a frozen Mitch McConnell in a wheelchair, only able to flash a peace sign. He almost broke the fourth wall by trying to say 'Live from New York' way too early, which was kinda iconic.
Next, Jeremy Culhane played Vice President JD Vance, and his camera test was drier than the Sahara. He started with a whole lot of nothing, saying, 'Hi, I'm JD Vance,' and got immediately dismissed. No cap, it was giving awkward.
But the main event? Colin Jost as Pete Hegseth. This dude immediately chugged one of Tom Holland's non-alcoholic Bero beers, calling it 'Spider-Man's new non-alcoholic bitch beer.' Hegseth also urged Republicans to do something shocking: 'I need all you patriots at home to do the gayest thing ever and vote.' He also dropped the line, 'I'm putting God back in war and it's working. Our soldiers are praying a lot more than they used to.'
Even James Austin Johnson as Trump made an appearance, dropping a classic 'Let me cook.' He also joked about his real-life promise to give voters $5,000 if Republicans win, adding, 'and that is not a bribe because I have no intention of following through on that promise.'
Dakota Johnson hosted the episode with musical guest Turnstile. It was a whole scene, y'all.
