A true rock legend

Sad news for the music world: Sass Jordan, the powerhouse singer, songwriter, and iconic judge of Canadian Idol, has died at the age of 65. Her family shared that she passed away peacefully on Oct. 2, surrounded by those who loved her most. They remembered her as “an inimitable force of nature” and “an irreplaceable being of light and joy.”

Her rise to stardom

Born Sarah Jordan in Birmingham, England, she was a total main character from the jump. By age 16, she was already fronting bands in Montreal clubs. Her recording career kicked off in 1986, and by 1989, she had secured a Juno Award for Most Promising Female Vocalist of the Year.

She really hit her stride with her 1992 album Racine, which lowkey became the defining moment of her career. The project sold hundreds of thousands of copies globally, churning out hits like “Make You a Believer.” Billboard even named her the top female rock artist of 1992—talk about a W.

More than just an idol

For many of us, she was the face of Canadian Idol, serving as the only female judge on the panel for all six seasons starting in 2003. Even after her reality TV era, she stayed tapped in, performing and releasing music for over two decades. She once said, “If you love music and you’ve been around as long as I have, you pretty much do what you got to do. But I love music. I am a huge, gigantic fan.”

She is survived by her husband, Derek Sharp, her daughter, stepdaughter, and brother.

Why it matters

Sass Jordan wasn't just a judge; she was a trailblazing rock force who carved out a lane for female artists in the 90s, leaving a legacy that remains absolute fire.
