The liquidation massacre

Real talk: if you were leveraged up on chip stocks in the crypto market, today was a total L. Over $800 million in positions were forcibly closed across 10 exchanges as markets went on a wild ride. The carnage kicked off during early Asian trading hours when Bitcoin dipped near $81,000 and South Korea’s KOSPI index took a massive 6% dive.

Nearly three-quarters of the liquidations—about $595 million—happened in just the last 12 hours. Binance users took the biggest hit, accounting for half of all the chaos, including one single Bitcoin long position worth $9.65 million that got nuked at $81,700.

Chip stocks vs. Crypto

What’s highkey wild is that traders betting on SanDisk (SNDK) via perpetual futures actually saw more liquidations ($19.5 million) than those betting on XRP ($18.78 million). These perpetual contracts let degens bet on traditional stocks 24/7 on crypto platforms, and right now, the vibes are off for memory chip makers.

Players like SK Hynix, Micron, and the triple-leveraged SOXL ETF also saw major heat on the heatmap. This sell-off was fueled by major drops in Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, both down about 8% due to fears over AI valuations and rising competition.

The current state

Out of the $800 million in liquidations today, a whopping 86% were long positions—basically, traders who bet on prices going up got caught in the crossfire. However, the energy has already shifted. As Bitcoin bounced back above $83,000, the trend flipped: in the last four hours, shorts have been the ones taking the Ls.

Why it matters

With most of the aggressive long leverage now cleared out, the market is bracing for Thursday’s U.S. inflation report. Always remember that leverage is a double-edged sword; while it can pump your gains, it can also leave your bags empty in a heartbeat. None of this is financial advice—stay safe out there.
