The situation on the ground
Things are getting pretty heated in the Yemen conflict. The Houthi group, which controls a significant chunk of northwest Yemen, claimed responsibility for two missile strikes on the international airport in Riyadh this Thursday. According to the General Authority of Civil Aviation, these attacks resulted in the deaths of three Saudi nationals, including one pilot from the state carrier, Saudia.
Beyond the fatalities, several other citizens and residents were injured. One strike targeted the airport directly, while another impacted a plane on the tarmac. While the airport has resumed normal operations, the vibes are definitely off in the region. The Houthis also claimed to have targeted facilities in Najran and an air base in Khamis Mushait, though Saudi officials haven't verified those specific claims.
How we got here
This isn't an isolated incident. Fighting has intensified over the last few weeks as the Houthis pushed into the Red Sea coast, specifically seizing the port of Mokha. That port sits right on the Bab al-Mandab Strait—a massive chokepoint for global shipping. While pro-government forces say they’ve since secured that area, the back-and-forth is relentless.
Earlier this week, between October 6 and 7, another three people were killed in separate Houthi attacks on Abha International Airport and King Khalid airport. The Houthis maintain that these strikes are a direct response to Saudi airstrikes against them. Real talk: this conflict has been a humanitarian nightmare since the Saudi-led coalition jumped in back in 2015. After a brief ceasefire in 2022, the cycle of violence is back with a vengeance.
Why it matters
This escalation marks a serious shift in the Houthi strategy as they aim to pressure the Saudi-backed government. With missiles flying at civilian airports and global trade routes like the Bab al-Mandab Strait at stake, the situation is becoming increasingly volatile. It's giving major cause for concern as both sides seem locked in a dangerous, deepening cycle.
