The rescue

When Pumpkin first arrived at the SPCA Cincinnati shelter back in March, the situation was pretty heavy. She had lost her owner and arrived at the shelter weighing 25lb (11.3kg). As the CEO and president of the shelter explained, she wasn't abused or neglected, but she was so severely obese that she could barely walk. Her legs were bowed, and she had such a hard time breathing that she would literally turn blue.

A new beginning

The shelter staff figured out that Pumpkin was about five years old, and her weight gain likely came from a mix of having two litters and being fed way too much. But the moment the shelter boss looked into her eyes, he knew he had to step up. “She was unable to lift her head. Still, she locked eyes with me as if to say: ‘Help!’” he recalled.

He decided to bring her home to join his three other cats, Jerry, Doe, and Dottie. Because she was so slow, she didn't bother the other pets, and she spent most of her time just getting used to a healthier diet.

Going viral

Here’s the plot twist: when the owner started posting videos of Pumpkin, he expected, like, maybe a few views. Instead, she went totally viral. People are obsessed—fans say they would “die for her” and that her content is healing them. It’s giving main character energy, no cap.

Since joining the family, Pumpkin has already shed almost 3lb. Her coat is looking much glossier, and she’s even regained the mobility to jump up on the couch to hang out with her siblings. The family even has a sixth birthday party planned for her on Halloween.

Why it matters

Pumpkin’s journey is a massive W. It shows that even when things feel like a total L, a little bit of care and a change in lifestyle can literally change an animal's life. Plus, it’s a wholesome reminder of why fostering and adopting shelter pets is so important—you never know who you might save.
