A life cut short
It’s giving absolute tragedy: Ann Mannix, a retired deputy police chief from San Francisco, was killed alongside her 24-year-old daughter, Katie, this past Sunday. The two were shot in their Marin County home by 68-year-old retired police sergeant Kevin Mannix, who then took his own life. The vibes are truly off as more details emerge about what was happening behind the scenes.
The real tea
Ann, 65, was a total trailblazer. She joined the SFPD in the 80s when the force was majorly male-dominated, eventually becoming the first woman to lead the department's SWAT team. Those who knew her described her as warm, funny, and a powerhouse leader. Just two weeks ago, she was at a party looking genuinely happy about her upcoming divorce from Kevin. According to her friend and attorney, Marie Hurabiell, Ann felt it was the “best thing” and was finally looking forward to her future. Hurabiell noted that Kevin, whom she described as a “possessive” partner, didn't want Ann to move on.
A shock to the department
Colleagues are stunned. Retired captain Alexa O’Brien called Kevin “vanilla” and noted his quiet, easy-going demeanor was a massive contrast to Ann’s commanding presence. There was zero indication he was capable of this, she said. The entire SFPD is reeling, with Mayor Daniel Lurie and Police Chief Derrick Lew sharing statements mourning the loss of a woman who dedicated her life to public safety. Katie, who was studying to be a nurse, was remembered by family friends as the “life of the party.”
