The latest launch
North Korea just fired what it describes as an intermediate-range hypersonic strategic missile on October 3. The weapon traveled about 621 miles into the waters off the country’s east coast. According to Sydney Seiler, a former U.S. Forces Korea analyst, this isn't just a random drill; this specific class of missile is a big deal because it puts Guam, Japan, and parts of Alaska within striking distance.
Why the vibes are off
While President Donald Trump has been vocal about his desire to restart personal diplomacy with Kim Jong Un, the North Korean leader isn't really biting. Even after Trump touted their "great" relationship at an Ohio rally, the launches continue.
Real talk: Pyongyang is playing a different game right now. They aren't interested in denuclearization. Instead, they are trying to normalize their status as a nuclear-armed state that keeps testing tech, regardless of whether they're talking to the U.S. or not. It’s giving "we’re doing our own thing."
The Russia connection
Why the cold shoulder? Kim has an emerging partnership with Russian President Vladimir Putin. With North Korea sending military support to Russia for the war in Ukraine, Kim is getting a lot of utility out of that relationship. Lowkey, he just doesn’t feel the need to prioritize a seat at the table with the U.S. when he has a powerful ally in Moscow.
The Dennis Rodman factor
Meanwhile, President Trump is keeping his options open. He recently appeared with former NBA star Dennis Rodman, who has a well-known personal relationship with Kim. While Trump insists he’s the one to keep the peace, he’s clearly using Rodman as a potential wildcard connection if things get dicey.
Why it matters
North Korea’s goal is to make the world accept them as a permanent nuclear power. While the U.S. hopes that keeping communication lines open—maybe even a phone call—will help manage potential crises, the reality is that Kim's priorities have shifted toward strengthening his axis with Russia, leaving little incentive for him to engage with the West right now.
