A 25-year veteran of the Nobu restaurant chain, Ryo Uchimiya, passed away this Saturday in a devastating crash in Malibu. The 51-year-old chef had arrived early for his shift and was sleeping in his parked car when the incident occurred around 6:50 a.m. ## The incident According to reports, a 16-year-old driving a Range Rover veered across the road's fog line, striking the chef’s parked vehicle on the shoulder. Sergeant John Addington of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department noted that speeding appears to be a factor. The teen driver remained at the scene and cooperated with law enforcement; officials stated there were no signs of intoxication, and no charges have been filed as the investigation continues. ## A deadly stretch of road This tragedy took place on the Pacific Coast Highway, a notoriously dangerous route that averages four fatal crashes annually. The area has also seen recent complications from ongoing construction following the 2025 wildfires. The community is still reeling from the 2023 tragedy on the same highway where a high-speed collision killed four Pepperdine University students. ## Why it matters Uchimiya wasn't just any employee; he was a foundational figure at Nobu Malibu who helped build the restaurant's operations. The staff is currently supporting his family during what the restaurant manager described as an incredibly difficult time. It’s a sobering reminder that even in a place as iconic as Malibu, the vibes can turn tragic in a split second.
