The Universe in Your Pocket

If you have an iPhone 11 or a third-gen iPad Air sitting in your drawer, you’re about to have a literal galaxy in your pocket. Apple and developer Hello Games just dropped the news that No Man’s Sky is officially heading to iOS devices on October 28.

The Technical Flex

Real talk: this is a huge technical W. If you remember when mobile games were basically just basic puzzles, the fact that a game generating massive, unique galaxies on-device is running on a phone is lowkey mind-blowing. The game manages this scale because it doesn't store millions of assets—it generates the universe on the fly. And at under 5GB, it’s not even going to eat your entire storage.

The Catch

Before you get too hyped, there are a few "it's giving compromise" moments. Multiplayer is a no-go on iOS. Also, if you’re trying to build and explore player-made settlements, you’ll need an iPhone 15 Pro or newer. Hello Games is basically testing the waters here, noting that they’ll support the port based on how many people actually jump in to play.

Controls and Cost

Good news for the gamers: the port supports touch controls, but you can also link up a controller or cast it to your TV. iPad users get the extra flex of mouse and keyboard support. It’s going to cost $19.99, but there’s a free trial so you can see if your phone can handle the heat before dropping the cash.

Why it matters

No Man's Sky is the ultimate redemption arc in gaming history, going from a major letdown at launch to a beloved masterpiece. Bringing it to mobile—even with some hardware-locked limitations—is a major move for portable gaming and a testament to how far phone hardware has come.
