The vibes were definitely off at the Arizona Cardinals versus New York Giants game this Sunday. Cardinals tight end Trey McBride found himself in the middle of a viral moment after a third-down play didn't go his way. McBride was lowkey upset that he didn't get a pass interference call, and let the referee hear about it. The ref apparently didn't just stand there and take it—cameras caught the official firing back with an expletive, and it’s blowing up the internet right now.
The NFLPA steps in
This isn't just staying on the field. JC Tretter, the president of the NFL Players Association, hopped on X to call out the behavior, saying it is highkey unacceptable. Tretter pointed out that players are always held accountable when things get heated, and he expects the league to keep that same energy for the officiating crew. The NFL has confirmed they are actively reviewing the incident.
Double standards?
This situation is giving major deja vu. Just recently, Patriots coach Mike Vrabel got slapped with a penalty for dropping a curse word at an official during a game against the Bills. Vrabel admitted he probably shouldn't have sworn, but noted he’s said similar things dozens of times throughout his career. It's a huge W for transparency that the league is looking into this, but the pressure is definitely on to see how they handle an official acting out.
Why it matters
It’s a classic case of "who polices the police"—or in this case, the refs. With the NFLPA demanding accountability, the league’s response will set a precedent for how players and officials interact when emotions are running high during the season.
