The Incident

It was meant to be a high-energy send-off for the Newcastle Knights, with thousands of supporters lining the streets to cheer on their team before the grand final. Things took a terrifying turn on Saturday morning when an 18-year-old P-plater, Indika Bambrick Samarasinghe, allegedly lost control of his car near a roundabout and careered into the crowd.

Witnesses say the scene went from celebratory to chaotic in an instant. Chris Clancy, who was among those hit, described the terrifying moments: "It happened in seconds, but when you stand there, seeing the car coming at you, I honestly thought I was going to die."

The Aftermath

Ten people were injured in total. According to the Hunter New England Local Health District, six victims remain in the hospital. Two are in serious condition, including a five-year-old girl who was placed in an induced coma, though she has since stabilized. Another victim, a local grandfather named Dave Martin, was injured while heroically trying to shield his two granddaughters from the impact.

Samarasinghe was charged with nine offences, including dangerous driving occasioning grievous bodily harm. He appeared in court on Sunday where he was denied bail and ordered to undergo a health assessment. He is due back in court on October 15.

Why it matters

Supporters are now rallying to help cover medical and recovery costs for the victims, proving that while the event was an absolute L, the community energy is highkey supportive.
