The Incident
Things took a dark turn in Newcastle this morning. Around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, a car plowed into a crowd of people gathered at the Newcastle Link Road and Transfield Drive roundabout. Fans were waiting to wave off the Knights team bus as they headed out for their NRL grand final, but the vibes were instantly killed.
According to reports, nine people were injured in the crash. One person is currently in critical condition, with another listed as critical but stable. Fifteen ambulances were dispatched to the scene to treat those hurt.
The Aftermath
The driver was arrested at the scene by New South Wales police. The Newcastle Link Road has been completely shut down in both directions, which forced the Knights to reroute their team bus. The club issued an Instagram update telling fans to disperse and keep the roads clear, noting that while they felt bad about the change in plans, "public safety is our priority."
Official Response
NSW Premier Chris Minns and Prime Minister Anthony Albanese have both shared their support for the victims. Albanese confirmed he is in contact with the Premier and thanked the first responders who arrived on the scene rapidly to handle the crisis.
Why it matters
This was supposed to be a weekend of pure hype for the city, but itβs giving a total tragedy instead. The NRL grand final is a massive deal, and seeing it marred by this kind of violence is heavy. Real talk, the community is currently reeling, and the focus is entirely on the recovery of those injured.
