The NBA is about to make some major moves. Real talk, the league is set to pick a winning bidder for a new Las Vegas franchise in the "very near future." We’re looking at a massive price tag of at least $12–13 billion, which covers both the team and a new arena that hasn't even been built yet. It's giving major investment vibes. ## The Vegas vs. Seattle showdown Currently, three groups are in the running for the Vegas spot. NBA commissioner Adam Silver wants this settled by the end of the year, with a goal for the new teams to hit the court by the 2028-29 season. While Vegas has never hosted an NBA team, they are already crushing it with the Aces, Raiders, and Golden Knights, plus the Athletics are moving in too. Seattle is also in the mix for a comeback after losing the SuperSonics in 2008. The league is prioritizing Vegas right now because their bidding process is more competitive, but Seattle’s situation is unique. Samantha Holloway, who owns the Seattle Kraken, is the only known bidder for a Seattle team right now. If people lose out on the Vegas bid, they might pivot to Seattle. ## Arena drama The biggest hurdle for Vegas is the facility. While Seattle already has Climate Pledge Arena ready for action—Silver noted they could literally play there in five weeks with some minor tweaks—Vegas needs a long-term solution. They might renovate T-Mobile Arena, home of the Golden Knights, or build a whole new “modern entertainment palace.” The league might even use a stopgap home for the first few seasons, just like the Toronto Raptors did back in the day. It’s a long road, but the momentum is undeniable.
