The arrest
Authorities in Massachusetts executed a major operation on October 8, leading to the arrest of 40-year-old Rigoberto Chavez-Regaldo on the island of Nantucket. The U.S. Marshals Service confirmed the early morning bust was a multi-agency effort involving the Brockton Police, the Massachusetts State Police Violent Fugitive Apprehension Section, the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing, and local Nantucket police.
The charges
The charges against Chavez-Regaldo are extensive and severe. He is facing counts of sexual conduct for a fee, aggravated rape resulting in serious bodily injury, aggravated statutory rape of a child, and trafficking a person for sexual servitude. Additionally, he is charged with rape of a child with force, indecent assault and battery on a person over 14, enticing a child under 16, and selling or delivering liquor to a person under 21.
Following his arraignment on Thursday, Chavez-Regaldo was ordered to be held without bail. A dangerousness hearing is set for Tuesday to reevaluate his detention status. Officials are keeping further details under wraps to protect the identities of the minor victims involved.
Why it matters
Dennis Matulewicz, head of the U.S. Marshals Service for the District of Massachusetts, described the case as "among the most disturbing" the agency handles. He emphasized that protecting minors from exploitation is a primary goal for law enforcement, stating that they will utilize all available resources to track down individuals who harm children. For the Nantucket community, the successful operation serves as a reminder of the ongoing push to crack down on predatory crimes and support victims in their recovery.
