The missing conversation
If you've been feeling like your body is just not vibing lately, you're definitely not alone. For many women, perimenopause and menopause bring way more than just hot flashes—they bring real, persistent pain. To mark World Menopause Day, the South Cumbria support group Menopause Matters is launching an online forum this Sunday from 19:00 to 20:00 BST to get real about the connection between midlife and chronic aches.
Why it hits different
Facilitator Leigh Williams, who started this initiative based on her own experience, points out that the medical system often fails to capture the full picture. "We might start with menopause and very quickly find ourselves talking about pain, sleep, mental health, stress or neurodiversity," Williams shared.
The stats are honestly wild—nearly three in four women deal with joint or muscle pain during perimenopause, and overall, women are up to 70% more likely to experience chronic pain than men. Common "it's giving struggle" symptoms include stiffness, swelling, joint aches, and even that annoying pins-and-needles feeling.
How to join
Forget stiff webinars or boring lectures. This event is designed to be an open conversation featuring a GP, a pelvic health physiotherapist, and people who have actually lived through these symptoms. If you're feeling like your world has been shrinking due to pain, this is a lowkey perfect place to find some support.
Anyone can sign up for free through the Menopause Matters booking website. It’s all about moving from just "getting by" to actually thriving, no cap.
Why it matters
With symptoms lasting up to a decade for some, midlife health needs more than just a quick fix. By creating a space that connects personal stories with professional insight, this forum is helping legitimize the experiences of half the population that are too often dismissed as "normal" aging.
