The closer is back
Big news for San Diego: Padres closer Mason Miller is officially back in the building. After a brief stint on the paternity list, Miller was reactivated just in time for Wednesday night’s Game 4. To make room on the roster, the team removed Wandy Rodriguez.
Miller missed Game 3, which the Padres managed to snag with a 4-3 W, thanks to a clutch two-inning save by starting pitcher Michael King. This win was huge because it kept their season from ending, but the bullpen still has plenty to prove.
Miller’s redemption arc?
The vibes were definitely off during Game 2, where Miller couldn't secure the save. After a dominant regular season where he racked up 38 saves and a 1.67 ERA—lowkey proving he’s the best closer in the game—he had a rough outing in that second game. He walked three of the next four hitters and surrendered a game-turning two-RBI single to Jackson Chourio, leading to a walk-off loss.
The bullpen update
It’s not all sunshine, though. Adrián Morejón, the team’s other late-inning specialist, is currently dealing with a shoulder issue. He hasn’t been on the mound since Game 1. Stammen said there is "definitely a chance" he pitches in Game 4, but the staff is being careful not to put him out there if he isn't 100%.
Even with the drama, the Padres still have relievers like Jason Adam and Bradgley Rodriguez holding it down.
Why it matters
Down 2-1 in the series, the Padres are staring elimination in the face. With Miller back, they have their go-to guy for the ninth inning, but the team’s overall success tonight will depend on whether that bullpen can execute when the pressure is at an all-time high.
