The shake-up
Real talk: the Matildas' roster for their upcoming international window just took a major L. Star midfielder Mary Fowler is officially out for the friendly matches against Germany and Haiti. Football Australia confirmed the news Tuesday morning, noting that the decision followed conversations between Fowler, her club team Manchester City, and the national staff.
Fowler has been absolutely cooking for Man City lately, and her absence is a total vibe check for coach Joe Montemurro. She’s arguably the squad's best creative engine, and losing her right before these critical World Cup prep games is highkey stressful.
Who’s filling the shoes?
With Fowler sidelined due to personal circumstances, Charlton midfielder Leah Davidson is getting the call-up. The 25-year-old just made the move to England’s top flight from Melbourne City and will be looking to prove herself with the national team. Davidson already has four caps and one goal to her name since making her debut in 2024.
Fowler isn't the only missing piece—the Matildas are also playing without Kyra Cooney-Cross.
The stakes are high
These games are massive for testing the squad. They’re facing World No. 3 Germany in Karlsruhe this Saturday and then Haiti in Chambly next Wednesday. Haiti is packing some serious heat, featuring star attacker Melchie Dumornay, so the defense is going to have their work cut out for them.
Why it matters
These friendlies aren't just for show—they’re the blueprint for next year’s World Cup. With Fowler out, the team has to pivot fast and see if the newer faces can hold their own against elite competition.
