The survival story of the year
Real talk: we love a happy ending. Luna, a 10-year-old Jack Russell terrier, is finally back with her humans after spending a wild month navigating Yellowstone National Park. After escaping a cabin on September 10, the pup managed to dodge grizzlies and wolves for weeks, proving that her early life on the streets definitely built up her survival skills.
How she got lost
It’s giving chaos. The family left Luna in their cabin with a "Do Not Disturb" sign while they went exploring, but housekeeping accidentally opened the door. The staff spent two hours chasing the dog before the owners even knew she was missing. Locals and tourists kept trying to help by calling her name or chasing her, but that lowkey backfired, triggering her fight-or-flight response and pushing her deeper into the wilderness.
The rescue mission
Volunteer Katie Boucher, who led the recovery, tracked Luna’s movements and realized the dog was actually retracing the family’s steps, hitting up the same lodges and eateries they had visited. To avoid attracting bears with food, Boucher used a genius hack: she baited a live trap with the family’s scent using a T-shirt and pillowcase. It worked, and Luna was secured on Wednesday.
Why it matters
It’s a massive W for animal rescue. With winter approaching, the search was on a serious deadline. Boucher was prepping to leave the park, as the local RV park for staff is set to close this coming Monday. Luna is currently being examined by a vet—she’s underweight, but as Boucher put it, she’s "alert and in good spirits."
