The tragedy in North Bellport
It’s giving absolute tragedy in Long Island. Lonnie Booker, a 43-year-old father of two, was shot in the chest on Tuesday evening at Robert Rowley Park in North Bellport. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina confirmed the shooting was a targeted attack, noting that the victim and the shooter knew each other. Surveillance footage caught the suspect speeding away from the scene in a red sedan, but no arrests have been made yet.
Hospital lockdown and arrest
The situation turned even more chaotic shortly after. Booker was rushed to NYU Langone-Suffolk in East Patchogue, but he unfortunately passed away. Things spiraled at the hospital when the victim's friend, 37-year-old Emmanuel Mayo, allegedly pushed an officer while trying to force his way in. Mayo was taken into custody on charges of second-degree harassment and resisting arrest. The hospital was placed on lockdown while order was restored, and the investigation into the shooting remains active.
Why it matters
This incident has the North Bellport community shaken. While officials have been trying to clean up the park—even making seven arrests for trespassing just last week—this fatal shooting serves as a grim reminder of ongoing safety concerns. Real talk, the fact that the violence carried over into a hospital setting only adds to the severity of this tragedy.
