The vibes surrounding Illinois' digital-asset tax are officially off. While state officials recently agreed to pause the 0.2% crypto tax for six months—shifting the start date from January 1 to July 1, 2027—industry heavyweights aren't just sitting on their bags.
The legal push
The Crypto Council for Innovation (CCI) and the Blockchain Association (BA) are teaming up with the Digital Chamber and the Illinois Blockchain Association to get this settled. In a Tuesday filing in the Circuit Court of Sangamon County, they requested an expedited summary judgment. The goal? Get a final ruling on the tax’s lawfulness by March.
Real talk, these groups aren't happy that the tax was allegedly “slipped into the state’s budget” without any public debate or feedback. “While pausing enforcement... protects Illinois consumers and businesses... it remains imperative that the merits are determined as soon as possible,” said CCI CEO Ji Kim.
Leadership shakeup
The plot thickens on the management front. Summer Mersinger is stepping down as CEO of the Blockchain Association this Friday. Kristin Smith is set to step in as interim head, with Mersinger staying on until the end of 2026 to help with the transition.
Why it matters
This is a major test case for how states handle on-chain assets. If the industry can get this tax struck down for good, it sets a massive precedent for other states eyeing crypto revenue. Just a heads up: this is strictly news and not financial advice—don't bet your entire stack on the outcome of a court case.
