Standard Chartered’s stablecoin outlook

Standard Chartered is adjusting its vibes regarding the stablecoin market, pushing back its $2 trillion valuation forecast from 2028 to 2030. While transaction volume is definitely up, the total supply growth hasn't been hitting the same way, keeping market cap around $309 billion this year. Geoffrey Kendrick, the bank's head of digital assets research, noted that Tether’s USDT remains the go-to for savings in emerging economies, while Circle’s USDC is holding down the fort for payments in developed markets. Real talk: the competition is heating up, and we might see a shift in market share based on how firms distribute interest earned on reserves. Also, watch out for potential accounting changes in the U.S. that could classify certain stablecoins as cash equivalents—a total game-changer for corporate adoption.

Kraken’s parent goes full TradFi

Kraken’s parent company, Payward, is making major moves to bridge the gap between on-chain activity and legacy finance. They’ve announced a definitive agreement to acquire Saldo Finance Oy, which owns the Lithuanian-licensed Saldo Bank. Once this deal closes in 2027—pending the usual regulatory green lights—Payward plans to offer interest on deposits, lending, and banking-as-a-service across markets like Sweden, Finland, Germany, and Lithuania. It’s a strategic play to level up their infrastructure.

Ledger security warning

If you’re based in Southeast Asia or Hong Kong, stay alert. Ledger has requested that all resellers and distributors in Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, the Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Hong Kong pull their hardware wallets from shelves. They are currently investigating reports of tampered devices and potential crypto drains. Ledger clarified that, as of now, they haven't verified any compromised devices purchased outside of those specific regions. They are still digging into exactly where the tampering happened in the distribution chain.

Why it matters

Whether it's centralized exchanges becoming banks, stablecoin adoption maturing, or hardware wallet supply chains showing cracks, these moves show the industry is lowkey trying to institutionalize. Always remember that this is never financial advice—stay vigilant with your own security and do your own research before moving your bags.
