The $2T outlook
Real talk: the stablecoin space is moving differently. Standard Chartered just dropped a fresh report, and they’ve pushed their prediction for a $2 trillion stablecoin market back to 2030—a two-year delay from their original timeline. Why? Because the market has been chilling at around $309 billion this year, and the total supply isn't exactly mooning right now.
But here’s the plot twist: even though the supply isn't skyrocketing, the activity is. Geoffrey Kendrick, the bank’s head of digital assets research, noted that existing stablecoins are changing hands way more frequently. It’s giving high velocity, proving people are actually using these bags rather than just letting them sit.
The four-way breakdown
Kendrick broke down the landscape into four main lanes:
- Emerging Market Savings: Tether (USDT) is still the main character here.
- Developed Market Payments: Circle’s USDC is leading the pack, though it's facing pressure from new challengers like USDG and M^0.
- Crypto Trading: USDC and Ethena’s USDe are holding it down.
- AI Agent Transactions: USDC is winning in this niche, but it’s still early days.
The regulatory vibe check
The real move now is how these platforms handle the yield from their reserves—that’s gonna decide who wins the long game. Meanwhile, the U.S. regulatory scene is getting real. Since the 2025 GENIUS Act, the Treasury is moving to restrict issuance to authorized players by January 2027, and the FDIC is looking to limit deposit insurance for holders. On the flip side, the FASB is proposing accounting tweaks that could make it much easier for companies to use stablecoins for settlements without the headache.
Why it matters
Stablecoins are lowkey becoming the plumbing for global finance and AI, but the regulatory landscape is shifting. Remember: this is just market analysis, not financial advice. Keep your eyes on the yield wars and the regulatory developments—that’s where the real alpha is hidden.
