A Holy Visit
NYC is known for some wild sights, but this one is truly main character energy. A raccoon decided it needed some spiritual guidance, walking straight into St. Joseph’s Church in Greenwich Village during a special "Night Fire" mass on Sept. 25. The critter navigated the candlelit steps on Sixth Avenue and Washington Place like it owned the place, casually waltzing through the front doors.
The Real Tea
Inside the foyer, the raccoon started sniffing around—presumably looking for a snack—before it got clocked by Father Jonah Teller. The pastor didn't hesitate, quickly maneuvering to cut off the intruder's path and ushering it back outside. The masked visitor then scampered off up 6th Avenue, leaving onlookers shook. One bystander shouted, “I’ve never seen one of those in the city before!”
Perfect Timing
It’s giving divine intervention, or maybe just a very confused trash panda. The timing is actually hilarious because the church was just a week away from the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi, a day famously celebrated by the Blessing of the Animals. Father Jonah Teller told The Post, “I don’t know if his spirit is walking in behind the raccoon, but its a great reminder of St. Francis and of God,” though he noted he’s hoping this specific guest doesn't make a habit of dropping by for services.
Why it matters
While it’s just a funny viral moment, it’s a wholesome reminder that even in a concrete jungle like NYC, wildlife is always lurking—sometimes even looking for a pew. It served as a cute, albeit chaotic, kickoff to the church's animal-blessing festivities.
