The Vibe Check: An $8M Rug Pull

Real talk: a massive crypto scam just got exposed in Greece, and it’s giving major 'lowkey nightmare' energy. Authorities are digging into a pyramid scheme that allegedly scammed around 10,000 investors out of roughly $8 million. The plot thickens with reports that among the nine suspects accused of running the show, two are serving members of the Greek military.

How it Went Down

The scheme reportedly used a local civic group—the Association of Artificial Intelligence Friends in Katerini—to lure people into their platform. The pitch was standard degen bait: put in at least €800, or drop €5,000 to be a 'VIP,' with the promise that your bags would double. In Katerini alone, they allegedly scammed about 1,842 people for roughly €2 million.

Investigators are currently looking into how it started, with one military suspect from Larissa allegedly picking up the playbook while traveling abroad. The whole thing kicked off back in July when two anonymous complaints were filed through the official Greek government portal, leading to the Katerini Sub-Directorate for Crime Investigation getting involved.

The Fallout

Police have arrested 17 people in total. A 44-year-old leader of the Katerini AI group is currently in custody after a judge didn't buy his story. Six other initial suspects were released on bail ranging from €15,000 to €20,000. It’s important to note that these are police allegations; none of this has been tested in court yet, so treat this as a reminder that the crypto space can be a wild west out there.

Why it matters
