Basically, you tell the Gemini app what you need—like booking a table or checking stock—and it does the heavy lifting. It calls the business, introduces itself, clicks through those infuriating automated phone menus, and sits on hold until a human picks up. The best part? You don't have to actually dial anything.

If you're worried about an AI going rogue, don't sweat it. You can see a live transcript of the call the whole time, and if things get weird or you just want to take over, you can jump into the conversation whenever you want.
This builds on a previous “Call for me” feature Google teased last year, but this version is way more capable because it actually lets you step in and manage the human side of the chat. For context, Meta is also building out phone-calling capabilities for its Muse AI, though reports suggest that might involve a human working behind the scenes to help out.
Why it matters
Right now, this is rolling out as an early preview exclusively for Gemini paid subscribers who are also in the “Phone by Google” Public Beta on a Pixel 11 in the U.S. It’s a massive W for anyone with social anxiety or zero patience for hold music. We’ll have to see if it actually works as smoothly as the marketing suggests, but if it saves us from spending 20 minutes listening to smooth jazz while waiting for a reservation, the hype is real.
