They’ve started testing a new feature in India where you can buy products directly from Walmart-owned Flipkart right inside Gemini and Google’s "AI Mode." It’s giving seamless shopping. Instead of just getting a list of recommendations, you’ll see a "Buy" button on specific listings that launches a Flipkart checkout flow without you ever leaving the AI window.
Why it matters
Real talk: Google isn’t just trying to be a smart chatbot anymore; they want to be your shopping assistant and your point-of-sale. They’re calling these "agentic" shopping experiences, basically tech-speak for AI that doesn’t just talk, it acts.
For now, the test is super limited—think smartphones and accessories—and only for a subset of users. But with India’s massive festive shopping season coming up in October, Google is planning a wider rollout soon. It’s an interesting play, especially since Google actually dropped about $350 million into Flipkart back in 2024.
It’s not quite the "Universal Commerce Protocol" (UCP) checkout they’ve been bragging about earlier, which is supposed to be a Google-hosted experience. This test uses a Flipkart-branded checkout, so it’s less about Google holding your card info and more about bridging the gap between "finding stuff" and "buying stuff." Amazon products are showing up in the results too, but for now, they don't get the direct "Buy" button. W for Flipkart users, I guess?
