It’s giving crisis mode for Frome Birth Talk, a charity that provides life-saving counseling for new mothers. The org is currently in a race against time, needing to raise £10,000 by this Sunday, or they’ll be forced to close their waiting list to new clients.

Why this matters

Postpartum mental health struggles are highkey common, with the Royal College of Midwives noting that about one in four new moms experience mental health issues after giving birth. For Sarah N'Guio, the charity was a literal lifesaver. After experiencing a traumatic birth that left her spiraling with postpartum depression and imposter syndrome, N'Guio says the team helped her process her trauma. "Without them, I probably would have lost my children and lost my life," she shared.

The funding struggle

Charity director Suzy Cristinacce says it’s been a rough go. Even though their grant applications are reportedly strong, they just aren’t getting approved. With about 50% of their budget usually coming from these grants, the "pot is getting smaller and smaller," making it hard to bridge the gap.

While the Royal United Hospitals (RUH) Bath points out that there are other pathways for support, like their own perinatal mental health team, local advocates say the charity provides a crucial, specialized space for moms to feel heard. If you’re looking to support, they’ve launched a crowdfunding campaign to stay afloat.

Why it matters

Real talk: the support system for new parents is often severely under-resourced. When charities that fill these gaps are forced to close due to funding issues, it leaves vulnerable families with nowhere to turn. Lowkey a massive L for maternal health support.
