A tragic end

Frances Lopez, a 33-year-old from Oildale, California, has tragically passed away months after suffering life-altering burns in a brutal attack. Lopez had been battling second- and third-degree burns across 30% of her body since the incident on July 11 at a homeless encampment. After undergoing multiple surgeries and spending months in a specialized burn center in Fresno, she had returned home to the Bakersfield area in September. Her husband, Steven, discovered her unresponsive after briefly leaving the house, and she could not be saved.

The attack

Lopez had previously shared the story of the attack, explaining she was visiting a friend inside a tent when a dispute over money turned violent. According to Lopez, a man grabbed a gas can, doused them in gasoline, and a woman present ignited the flames. Lopez managed to escape by using the “stop, drop, and roll” technique before running to a nearby trailer park for help. She required multiple resuscitations during her transport to a burn unit in Fresno, where she faced a long, difficult recovery involving constant travel for medical care.

What this means for you

Real talk: this situation is heartbreaking. The Kern County Sheriff’s Office has not yet announced a cause of death, noting that an autopsy could take weeks, and there have been no confirmed arrests for the July assault. Her family, including her grandparents Michael and Claudia Gezzer, are devastated and are pleading for the public to help find those responsible for the attack. For now, the suspects remain free, leaving a grieving family looking for answers.
