The terrifying moment
Talk about main character energy, but not in a way anyone ever wants. On September 2, Aaron and Clare Walenga were out for a romantic date night in Winter Haven, Florida, after dropping their three kids at a church youth group. While they were walking hand-in-hand along the West Orange Trail, a sudden storm rolled in. In a split second, a bolt of lightning struck them both.
Aaron, 48, remembers waking up in extreme pain and totally confused. "My first thought was that we got hit by a car," he said. He was left paralyzed on the ground, while his wife, 43-year-old Clare, went unconscious.
The good Samaritans
Real talk: this could have ended so much worse if it weren't for four absolute legends nearby. Charlotte, Michael, Amber, and Tiffany saw the strike and rushed to the scene immediately. They called 911 and started CPR on Clare, who bystanders said had turned blue and stopped breathing for several minutes.
"I like to talk about the amount of bravery that they showed," Aaron said. The responders arrived about 10 minutes later, and the couple has since formed a tight bond with the group who saved them.
The aftermath
The physical toll was no joke. Aaron suffered fractured eye sockets, a broken nose, damaged teeth, and severe burns on his hand and wrists from his umbrella and Apple Watch. Both of them also dealt with brain bleeds and heart damage.
But here is the tea: the couple is calling their recovery a full-on miracle. Doctors found that within just two days, their brain bleeds and heart damage had completely healed. Clare also recovered from initial memory loss during that same timeframe.
Why it matters
Beyond just the wild survival story, the Walengas say this experience proved to them the power of community. Between the strangers who jumped in and their local church and neighbors stepping up to help with their kids and home, the couple says they feel nothing but gratitude. It’s a massive reminder that even in the most random, scary circumstances, people really do show up for each other.
