A dad is facing the legal aftermath of a heartbreaking accident in Cyprus. Joshua Foster, 37, was fined 3,000 euro (about £2,500) after his two-year-old son died following a fall at the King Evelthon Beach Hotel and Resort in Chlorakas.

The incident took place on July 12, which was the first day of the family's trip. The Paphos District Court heard that Foster had lifted his son onto a windowsill to show the toddler a view of a water park. He failed to notice the window was open, leading to a fall of nearly 40 feet from the fourth floor.

Foster admitted to causing death through a reckless, rash, or dangerous act, and the sentence was handed down on Friday morning.

Why it matters

This is a devastating reminder of how quickly a family vacation can turn into a nightmare. Hotel safety standards and parental supervision are under the microscope here, but for those involved, the loss is an absolute tragedy.
