The Incident
Things just went from bad to worse for South Carolina football. The SEC and South Carolina confirmed Monday that star defensive end Dylan Stewart is facing a one-game suspension following some messy moments during Saturday's 49-18 blowout loss to Alabama.
The breaking point? Stewart threw a punch at the helmet of Alabama tight end Josh Ford right after a Crimson Tide touchdown. The officials somehow missed it during the game, but the conference saw the receipts. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey didn't hold back, calling the move "egregious contact" and confirming that any more drama from Stewart will lead to even harsher consequences. The Fallout
This isn't the only hurdle Stewart is facing. South Carolina coach Shane Beamer had already put the junior on an indefinite suspension from the team on Sunday. Beamer made it clear that this goes way beyond just one bad play. "There's a standard of how we do things in our program. It's beyond the punch," Beamer said. Before the punch, the coach was even seen calling out Stewart for loafing during the game.
Why it matters
This is a massive L for the Gamecocks. Stewart is a former five-star recruit and a key piece of the roster alongside LaNorris Sellers and Nyck Harbor. With a 2-2 record and an 0-2 start in SEC play, the season is lowkey on life support. To make matters worse, they have three ranked opponents coming up back-to-back. With Beamer’s job security already looking shaky, losing a potential first-round talent like Stewart is highkey a disaster. The team faces No. 24 Kentucky this Saturday, and the vibes are definitely off.
