The situation
Real talk: the plot thickens for the Trump inner circle. President Trump is distancing himself from two of his high-profile political advisers, Chris LaCivita and James Blair, after news dropped that they spent their weekend helping out the government in Republika Srpska.
If you're not up to speed, Republika Srpska is an autonomous part of Bosnia and Herzegovina, and the government there is known for its pro-Russia stance. The New York Times reported that LaCivita and Blair were allegedly paid hundreds of thousands of dollars for their consulting work ahead of local elections.
The fallout
Trump took to Truth Social to drop a statement, claiming he had zero clue who else these guys were working for on the side. He described them as "outside consultants" and warned that if a conflict of interest exists, he's ready to fire them immediately.
Lowkey, this is a bit of a mess because these two are major players. LaCivita is a co-manager for the 2024 campaign, and Blair is a campaign adviser who is currently on a leave of absence from his role as White House deputy chief of staff to help with the midterms. Both are currently working with Maga Inc, the massive SuperPac designed to help Republicans in November.
Why it matters
It’s giving crisis management, especially with the midterm elections right around the corner. Democrats are currently leading in several competitive races, and Republicans are banking on Maga Inc’s $415 million war chest to turn the tides. While a spokesperson for the PAC says the two men were still working and hopping on team calls while abroad, it’s a bad look for the President to be answering questions about Russia-linked consulting gigs while the party is struggling to keep voters hyped. W or L for the campaign strategy? We’ll see next month.
