The blame game

The political vibes in Texas are looking a little shaky for the GOP, and President Trump is not here for it. He recently took to Truth Social to preemptively vent his frustrations, laying the groundwork for a potential upset by pointing fingers at Senator John Cornyn and Karl Rove. Trump accused them of working to undermine Ken Paxton’s Senate campaign, calling them "WEAK and INEFFECTIVE Political Hacks."

Real talk: Texas has been a reliable Republican stronghold since 1988, and Trump cruised to a 14-point victory there just two years ago. But the plot thickens now that polls—including a fresh one this week—show Democrat James Talarico with a narrow 50% to 47% lead.

The money chase

This race is highkey expensive, with over $500 million in ad spending flooding the state. Elon Musk is playing a major character role here, dropping $158 million into a Senate GOP super PAC last month. That cash is being funneled into a pop-up PAC specifically tasked with helping Paxton cross the finish line.

Despite being outspent by these massive PACs, Talarico is holding his own. He hauled in an impressive $64 million in the third quarter alone, mostly from small donors. His ability to raise "hard dollars" actually gives him an edge on ad rates compared to the PAC money. Even Senator Bernie Moreno (R-Ohio) admitted the fundraising was "mind-blowing."

Why it matters

Republican leadership warned months ago that nominating Paxton would make this seat a pricey headache to defend, and the current scramble for cash suggests they were right. If the party loses a seat in a state as red as Texas, it’s not just a W for Democrats—it’s a major wake-up call for the GOP moving into election night.
