After a seven-year wait, the team at Remedy Entertainment has finally dropped Control Resonant, the follow-up to their 2019 hit. If you’ve been dying to return to the weird, preternatural vibes of the Bureau, it’s officially available now on Steam, the Epic Games Store, PS5, and Xbox Series X and S.
A sibling swap
Real talk: the narrative structure here is genius. The first game was all about Jesse Faden searching for her brother, Dylan. This time? The roles are totally reversed. Jesse has gone missing, and Dylan—played by Sean Durrie—is now the main character trying to track her down in a version of Manhattan that is, quite frankly, losing the plot.
Creative director Mikael Kasurinen explains that there’s a deliberate “reverse symmetry” to the two games. As Dylan navigates this crisis, he isn't just dealing with monsters; he’s looking for a sense of belonging. Plus, he gets a new companion named Zoe, who acts as the perfect POV character if you’re a newbie just trying to figure out what a ‘Hiss’ is.
New moves, new moods
Performance-wise, Durrie had to switch things up. While he played Dylan in the original, he notes his mindset is totally different now. “He’s infected by The Hiss in the original ‘Control,’ so he doesn’t act like that anymore,” Durrie shared. Now, it’s all about his guilt, his need for atonement, and rediscovering his own humanity.
Gameplay also got a major glow-up. Say goodbye to the gun-focused action—Dylan is strictly melee with a shape-shifting weapon called the Aberrant. The devs also leaned into environmental traversal, letting you manipulate gravity to attach to surfaces. It’s giving main character energy, for real.
Why it matters
Remedy is clearly swinging for the fences by turning their protagonist dynamic on its head. By moving from a search-and-rescue mission for a sister to a journey of self-discovery for the brother, they’re keeping the franchise’s lore fresh while making sure the combat feels like an evolved version of what we already love.
