Things are shaking up at the Blockchain Association. Summer Mersinger is officially stepping down as the group’s leader, just one week after the industry took a major L in Washington.
The DAMA Defeat
Last week, the U.S. Senate failed to pass the Digital Asset Market Clarity Act. In a massive blow to the space, the bill didn't just stumble—it was rejected by all Senate Democrats and a handful of Republicans, marking a total dead-end for the legislation.
The Leadership Shuffle
With Mersinger heading out, Kristin Smith is stepping back in as interim CEO starting October 16. Smith isn't a new face; she actually founded the organization in 2018 and ran it until 15 months ago. She currently holds a role at the Solana Policy Institute and will balance both jobs, while continuing her ongoing work as the Blockchain Association’s board president.
Mersinger, who joined the group after her stint as a member of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, said she is proud of the progress made during her tenure, citing the passage of the GENIUS Act and shifts in regulatory behavior at both the SEC and CFTC.
Why it matters
Real talk: Policy is highkey the biggest hurdle for crypto right now. When big bills like the Clarity Act fizzle out, the vibes are off for the entire market. Watching how the Blockchain Association maneuvers this transition will be a major signal for whether the industry can regain its footing or if this loss is a sign of more friction ahead. As always, none of this is financial advice—stay safe with your bags.
