If you've been living in the Crypto Twitter bubble, you might think everyone is obsessed with self-custody and guarding their own private keys. But according to Christian Trummer, the co-CEO of the Austria-based exchange Bitpanda, the actual retail crowd is vibing differently.
Speaking on Cointelegraph’s Chain Reaction podcast, Trummer shared that since the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework fully kicked into gear, users are showing way more faith in regulated firms. For the average person, it’s giving security—they’d much rather trust a platform that’s playing by the rules than deal with the stress of managing their own keys.
The MiCA Reality Check
Real talk: regulations are usually a massive headache for degens, but Trummer argues that for the broader market, this is a W. It’s creating a lane for users who want to stack their bags without worrying about platform rug-pulls or total uncertainty.
However, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Trummer is calling for stricter enforcement against companies that are still out here acting like MiCA doesn't exist. Since the July 1 deadline for the grandfathering period, plenty of noncompliant firms have been operating in the shadows. Trummer points out that this puts regulated players at a competitive disadvantage, which is a major L for the companies actually trying to follow the law.
Why it matters
The EU is pushing for stronger supervisory powers, with the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) actively hunting down unauthorized firms that are still soliciting European users. While the industry debates the balance between innovation and oversight, one thing is clear: the era of the "wild west" in Europe is fading fast. Just remember, institutional-grade regulation isn't the same as guaranteed profit—always do your own research and don't ape into anything just because a platform is compliant. None of this is financial advice.
