The situation

Real talk: things just got super tense in Austin. Authorities officially stopped a potential attack on the Texas State Capitol yesterday after receiving what they called “credible information” about a planned violent event set for Thursday.

SWAT officers moved in fast, arresting 40-year-old Benny Caldera Jr. at his home in Converse, Texas—which is just outside of San Antonio—around 3 a.m. on Wednesday.

The fallout

Caldera is currently being held on a $75,000 bond. Officials say he’s looking at potential felony charges, including a terroristic threat against a public servant. While the state Department of Public Safety (DPS) is staying quiet on the specific details of the plot because the investigation is still active, they made it clear that they aren’t messing around.

Governor Greg Abbott confirmed that the FBI helped out the state DPS to get the job done, posting on social media that “Texas will NOT tolerate threats of violence against our Capitol.”

Despite the drama, the Capitol building is still operating normally, though Texas Senate secretary Patsy Spaw confirmed that security is being ramped up for the time being.

Why it matters

It’s giving major stress, but the takeaway is that law enforcement caught this before it escalated. If you’re in or around the Austin area, just be aware that security is tighter than usual for now. It’s a reminder that threats against public spaces are being taken seriously, and authorities are moving quickly to keep things safe.
