The Yankee-doodle drama
It’s been over 12 years since Gone Girl director David Fincher claimed Ben Affleck literally shut down production on the thriller because he refused to wear a New York Yankees hat. Well, the Red Sox superfan has finally entered the chat on the Happy, Sad, Confused podcast to set the record straight, and it’s giving major 'he’s lying' energy.
“He’s such a lying motherf--ker,” Ben said, keeping it 100 about his pal. “He loves to say s--t like that.”
The real tea
Ben explained that the whole situation was nowhere near the dramatic, days-long production halt Fincher made it out to be. According to the actor, the debate lasted all of 20 minutes. He wasn't trying to be a diva, he was just lowkey worried about the character’s immersion. He told Fincher that putting a Boston guy in a Yankees hat would be a massive distraction for the audience and take them straight out of the plot.
Instead of a total meltdown, Ben says it was just a quick creative disagreement. They eventually reached a compromise: Ben rocked a Mets cap instead. “I was like, ‘All right, sure man. F--k it,’” Ben recalled.
Why it matters
Ben clearly adores Fincher and respects the guy's dark sense of humor, but he’s not letting the director's penchant for storytelling slide. It’s a hilarious reminder that even in massive Hollywood productions, sometimes the biggest drama is just two dudes arguing over a baseball cap. W for the Mets, we guess?
