The Pivot of a Lifetime

Real talk: society lowkey loves to tell us that life stops being interesting after 40, let alone 60. But Barbara Scully is out here proving that mindset is completely wrong. At 64, this Dublin-based icon is thriving as a stand-up comedian and storyteller, filling rooms with her one-woman show, Because I’m Worth It.

It’s giving main character energy now, but things didn't always look so bright. A few years ago, after raising her kids, Scully hit a major wall. Despite having a solid CV, she couldn't land a job. "The day I realised I couldn’t even get social welfare, I sat in the car on the driveway in tears," she shared. It’s a total mood, but she decided to stop waiting for someone else to give her a shot and started making her own opportunities instead.

Making Her Own Lane

Instead of spiraling, she channeled her energy into writing and broadcasting. She became an author, a columnist, and a regular on Irish radio and TV. When an opportunity to perform with the group Funny Women popped up in 2022, she stepped out of her comfort zone. She turned a chapter from her book into a comedy sketch, and that first rush of laughter from the audience? She says it felt like "rocket fuel."

Now, she tours Ireland playing for crowds of up to 200, talking about everything from the realities of menopause to embracing your age. Growing up as a 6ft tall girl in a male-dominated house, she says she learned to use her voice early—and she’s definitely not stopping now.

Why it matters

If you're feeling stuck, remember that failure isn't the end of the world. Scully's journey is a massive W for anyone worried that they've missed their window. Her biggest takeaway? Don't waste your energy trying to look younger—spend it on the things that actually make you happy. Say less, Barbara.
