The AI hype check

Real talk: the obsession with AI might be pushing the global economy toward a breaking point. The International Monetary Fund (IMF) just dropped their Global Financial Stability Report, and it’s giving a major heads-up that our current financial vibes are not as stable as they seem.

The problem? AI stock valuations are sitting at sky-high levels, and a ton of money is being poured into the sector through heavy borrowing. The IMF is worried that if the bubble pops, the consequences won’t stay in the U.S. They noted that global exposure to U.S. AI assets is at an all-time high, meaning a crash could ripple out everywhere, especially across Asian markets.

Why things are getting messy

The "Magnificent Seven" tech giants—Alphabet, Amazon, Apple, Meta, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla—now make up over 35% of the S&P 500. That’s a massive jump from 12% a decade ago. But here’s the kicker: the IMF warned there is "growing evidence" that all this massive spending on hyperscale datacenters might not actually pay off the way everyone expects.

Beyond just stock prices, the issue is how these companies are funding the boom. We’re talking about "circular financing" where stronger companies are tying their money to weaker partners. In just the last three years, there’s been $300 billion in transactions between these firms, backed by $650 billion in debt. If AI doesn't deliver the massive profits everyone is betting on, this web of debt could force some ugly market sell-offs.

Cyber risks and the future

It’s not just the stock market acting like a casino. The IMF listed AI volatility, rising government borrowing costs, and massive cyber-attacks as the three main risks to global stability.

Even in London, the Financial Conduct Authority is feeling the pressure. Nikhil Rathi, the FCA chief executive, told MPs that small businesses need to get insured ASAP to protect themselves against AI-related cyber threats. He specifically pointed out that smaller firms might struggle to handle advanced risks from powerful new AI models.

Why it matters

When the IMF says the economy is testing its limits, it’s a sign that the AI gold rush is starting to look highkey unsustainable. If the tech bubble bursts, it could hit everything from your investments to global stability, proving that sometimes, the hype isn't worth the risk.
