The Privacy Play Goes Global
If you’ve been watching Zcash (ZEC) lately, you know the vibes are highkey bullish. The cypherpunk favorite is officially getting its moment in Europe. On September 22, investment firm 21Shares launched Europe’s first Zcash exchange-traded product (ETP) across Euronext Paris and Amsterdam, trading under the ticker ZCASH.
For anyone tired of managing private keys or worrying about losing their bag due to a simple slip-up, this ETP is a major W. It lets investors get exposure to Zcash through the same brokerage accounts they use for traditional stocks or bonds. No exchange accounts required, and zero stress about managing your own hardware wallet.
The Nitty-Gritty
It’s important to stay real with the numbers: this fund is physically backed, meaning it actually holds the underlying tokens. 21Shares has tapped BitGo to handle custody. However, convenience has a price tag. The ETP carries a 2.5% annual management fee, which is definitely steeper than what you’d see on standard Bitcoin or Ethereum funds.
Day one saw a relatively modest start with about $100,000 in assets under management. Zcash itself has been on a total tear, up over 2,700% this year as investors lean into the “Bitcoin, but private” narrative. The token recently pushed past $1,600, though it hit a bit of a snag this week, sliding around 6.6% to settle near $1,522.
Why it matters
This move mirrors the strategy we saw from Grayscale back in August when they converted their Zcash Trust into an ETF on the NYSE. Institutional players are clearly betting that regulated demand for privacy coins is more than just a passing phase.
Remember, ZEC isn't just another coin—it forks Bitcoin’s core model (like the 21 million supply cap and halving schedule) but adds that stealth-mode privacy layer for transactions. With ZEC now holding the ninth-largest market cap in the space, this ETP is just another sign that crypto is becoming more integrated into traditional finance.
